About

...Kia mau ki to Maoritanga

Growing up in a small town had its benefits. In times of need help was only a phone call away and everyone gathered to offer their support.
Just as the birth of a child was natural, so too was the passing of a loved one. Children were actively involved with funeral proceedings. This involved going to the Marae for the entirety of the tangihanga (grieving process). Seeing the deceased was part of that process. Many people would travel far to come and pay their respects. These were busy days and as you got older your role changed. You helped with the preperation of food, cleaning, and making sure all your visitors were well looked after. All of this helped relieve the pressures put upoon the bereaved family.
These customs are still practised today, however, changing life styles makes it easy to not realise a loved one has passed away. It was this that prompted me to start up this site. Other reasons being as follows:

  • Giving the customer the option of advertising in English or Maori or both.
  • Early notification of someone's passing - giving people the opportunity to rearrange their schedules to attend the funeral.
  • Giving more details such as:
    • time the body is leaving the funeral home.
    • where the body will lie in state, Marae, home etc.
    • day and time of funeral.
    • if we have a body coming from overseas the time of arrival etc.
  • The notice is easily updated or readjusted as circumstances change.

It was important that the site be user friendly.

  • When someone wanted to check if they had the right person they could search by nickname, surname, maiden name.
  • Able to search by area person was originally from, eg. place name, iwi or hapu.
  • If you don't have a daily paper, access to a computer allows you to check the funeral notices. Notices are left on for 90 days and archvied.

Other services being offered are unveiling notices and memorial notices.
